DPD Germany opens high-performance parcel sorting centre in Erftstadt
DPD has opened a €42 million (£34.2 million) parcel sorting centre in Erfstadt near Cologne, Germany that has the highest capacity of any centre in the international DPD network.
The 8.3 hectare site replaces the previous location in Frenchen and will serve the Cologne conurbation as well as other areas. The sorting hall measures 13,000m2, has 320 loading gates and can handle up to 120 linehail operations. The adjacent office building measures 2,800m2.
The centre features a leading-edge conveyor system that can process more than 18,000 parcels per hour, with shipments travelling at 2.5m per second along the conveyor belts. They are automatically weighed, scanned and measured during the process and are then directed to the loading gate.
More than 100 tonnes of steel and over 1,000 photoelectric barriers went into the construction of the sorting installation with its overall length of more than 8km, while the belts are driven by 600 motors.
The depot began operations on 27 December 2012 and employs a workforce of more than 300, together with up to 350 delivery drivers.
