Postkom warns against liberalisation directive
Norway's postal union, Postkom, has warned that implementing the final phase of the EU postal liberalisation directive will not only see increased competition in Norway, but a decline in services for rural areas.
"We are now mobilising grassroots in Norway against the directive," said union leader Odd Christian Overland, who is asking the European Parliament to change the directive. Overland was one of the speakers at a hearing on the controversial directive of the European Parliament, along with trade unions and politicians from several European countries.
Overland maintains that the directive was already causing problems in other European countries and that full liberalisation will actually damage services.
The final phase of liberalisation would see competition in the under 50 grams market in Norway and Postkom fears that it will see rapid decline in postal services in rural areas.
“Competition does not create better and cheaper services. On the contrary it undermines the fabric of what is an essential service," said Overland.
