Transport/Logistics Innovation of the Year: Blue&Me Fleet from Iveco and Qualcomm

Giuliano Giovannini, sales and marketing, product director, Iveco

Can you tell us more about Blue&Me Fleet?

Blue&Me Fleet is the result of two global joint ventures. The operating system and hardware are born from the collaboration between the Fiat Group and Microsoft, while the specific software designed by Iveco will be used to deliver web services through our alliance with Qualcomm.

Blue&Me Fleet was developed using the combined efforts of Iveco and Qualcomm Enterprise Services, the world market leader in integrated wireless communication and information systems and related services.

The telematics fleet management and driver assistance package, Blue&Me Fleet, uses Qualcomm’s FleetVisor communications platform to guarantee that customers have a complete overview of the performance of every van and every driver at any given moment. This means fleet managers can coach their drivers and support employees so that they can work more efficiently, resulting in benefits including fuel savings, a more effective use of labour hours, and a more environmentally friendly operation through reduced emissions.

What are the main benefits to the postal industry?

Blue&Me obtains vehicle data, such as fuel consumption, mileage, speed, and engine usage from the vehicle, while also tracking the driver identity so that data can be correlated, allowing an individual driver’s activity and driving behaviour to be monitored and managed by the company. Blue&Me also offers tachograph remote download, which is an interface with the digital tachograph that allows remote authentication and download of the tachograph data. Tachometer remote download capability eliminates the need for the fleet operator to access the vehicle directly to download this data. Looking to the future, additional features may include automatic technical assistance, driving style evaluation and telediagnosis.

How is it currently being used in the market?

Blue&Me Fleet is based on the most widespread onboard computer platform, which has been installed as original equipment in more than 600,000 cars and commercial vehicles worldwide. We believe it will become the leading-edge integrated product for fleet management.

What does winning the award mean to Iveco?

The Blue&Me Fleet was developed as part of Iveco’s strategy to improve its customers’ efficiency and reduce their environmental impact when transporting goods. We consider this award to be an acknowledgement of our dedicated efforts to develop sustainable and innovative solutions. Feedback from the first users of Blue&Me Fleet has been extremely positive and we are facing growing interest in the market for this system.

Bill Karnazes, managing director of Qualcomm Enterprise Services Europe,
added: “The integration of the advanced Iveco Blue&Me Fleet system into our own FleetVisor Mobile Communications Platform provides state-of-the-art services to those who want to improve the performance of their transportation, multi-drop or service operations. The close cooperation between Qualcomm and Iveco ensures that all business-critical information is at the customer’s fingertips, including details on the drivers, vehicles and cargo.”
